A water softener is an excellent option for homes with light to heavy hard water. In San Diego county, we have some of the hardest tap water in the nation generally ranging between 12-16 grains per gallon. Softeners reduce water hardness by removing heavy minerals like calcium, iron, and magnesium from the water supply coming into the home. A water softener prevents common water problems including mineral deposits and scale buildup, spotty dishes after a dishwasher cycle, dry hair after showering, and faded colored clothing from the washing machine.
A water softener solves this problem by using cationic resin to attract the heavy minerals to small polymer beads. A softener will then use salt to regenerate, and strip the beads of heavy minerals.
A well maintained and properly calibrated softener should add very little salt to your effluent water line. They are generally installed on homes along with a drinking water system to strip any excess salt that may be added to the water.
